Welsh first at EU Regions Committee

31/01/2013

In a first for the Welsh language, a Plaid Cymru AM is set to present an influential report to the European Union’s Committee of the Regions on Thursday (31st January), through the medium of Welsh.

Carmarthen East and Dinefwr AM Rhodri Glyn Thomas represents the National Assembly for Wales on the Committee, which is a consultative body within the EU tasked with giving sub-state input into the European political process.

Mr. Thomas has been selected to lead on two reports. The first is on EU, national and sub-national funding. The second is on public and private investment at the local and regional level, including investigating the role of the European Investment Bank, which in recent years has financed infrastructure projects in Wales through Welsh Water/Dwr Cymru, amongst other projects.

The increased visibility of Wales in Europe comes amidst Plaid Cymru leader Leanne Wood’s call for Wales’s voice to be heard in the debate on EU membership.

Plaid Cymru AM Rhodri Glyn Thomas commented:

“In light of David Cameron’s anti-European speech last week, and the consensus that Wales benefits from our EU membership, it is important that we take every opportunity to maximise our presence in Europe. Plaid Cymru is working hard for the Welsh national interest, and I am delighted to have the chance to represent Wales on the Committee of the Regions. We want to improve Europe so that the sub-state regions have more influence, and to ensure that more responsibilities can be exercised at the sub-state level.

“I am delighted to be able to present a Committee of the Regions report in Welsh for the first time ever. This is a great achievement for Plaid Cymru. The report will contain valuable lessons that will feed into the EU policy agenda and hopefully improve it. Wales has a strong future in the European Union, if we are willing to fight for it.”
